Dylan Evans

One Man’s Experiment with Utopia

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live off the grid? Where would you go? For how long? And how would you meet your basic needs?

Academic philosopher Dylan Evans, worried about the end of civilization, believed he had a moral imperative to live a humbler life while preparing for the worst. Evans had come to believe that the world was going to run out of resources and he wanted to get out in front of it. He wanted not only to live more sustainably, but to form a closer community with folks who could form a Utopia of their very own.

I don’t want to ruin the story for you. But things don’t end well for Dylan Evan’s Utopia experiment. In this Voice & Exit talk, Dylan recounts his tale, as well as the lessons of a world going headlong into modernity.

What is Utopia? How are we to live? What does it mean to be sustainable? And will our fragile interdependence become stronger or weaker in the future?

Voice & Exit is a dynamic, transformative festival of the future. Exiters are dedicated to maximizing human flourishing for individuals, communities and our world.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality,” Buckminster Fuller reminds us. “To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” The Voice & Exit community is for those actively seeking to opt-out of models that don’t give rise to human flourishing to create those models that do.

We don’t predict the future, we create it.
